According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, the Resident In-Service Examination (RISE) is an accurate predictor of a candidate’s likelihood of passing their board certification examinations. The study showed that as a candidate’s quartile ranking on the RISE exam dropped, so did the candidate’s likelihood of passing all of his or her certifying exams. In fact, in 2008, fewer than half of 2008 graduating residents in the bottom quartile passed all of their certifying examinations.
