Over the last five years, the American Board of Dermatology exam pass rates have fluctuated between 89% and nearly 98%, with a spike to 97.5% in 2013. There have been several reports that taking the exam immediately after dermatology residency increases a candidate’s chances for passing. In a review published in 2010, candidates who either repeated the exam or did not take it immediately after residency had a higher failure rate in all three years of the study. The pass rate for general dermatology has historically been significantly higher than that for pediatric dermatology.
